Sheik Hebazat Hussain, an ordinary man with an extraordinary wealth of knowledge is a school dropout sustaining a family of three sons, two daughters, and his wife. He is an agriculturalist by profession, but difficult times have also forced him to indulge into other professions as well. These include selling fruits and livestock for domestic purpose to supplement his income. However, his health makes it difficult for him to continue these secondary occupations.

Despite the hardships he faces, he strongly believes in ‘sharing knowledge for the society’. He credits his guru, Late Ustad Md. Sheikh Hazi Munshi with whom he had spent about four decades as the source of his knowledge. From him, he understood the medicinal properties of different plants. He then used his own experimentation to research further. With the wealth of knowledge that he gathered, he now uses it to administer herbal medication for problems like respiratory distress, ephemeral fever, fracture, otitis, diarrhea, abdominal pain and retention of the placenta in animals.

The fact that he has never asked for any financial remuneration for his services proves that he is the real cattle hero. Today, people from many nearby villages come to seek his advice on animal health related problems. After he shared his practices with NIF, prior art search was undertaken after plant identification. The herbal practice for ephemeral fever was found to be novel.

Sheik Hebazat’s unique medication was tested at GC Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, CSKHPKV, Palampur, Himachal Pradesh involving several veterinary institutions in districts of Mandi and Kangra. It was found that the medication was indeed effective in curing respiratory distress and lameness. Many community meetings were held to ascertain whether the knowledge about the particular herb for treating ephemeral fever was common or not. Through the meetings, it was discovered that no one used the said herbal plant for treating ephemeral fever.

We salute Sheikh Hebazat for being a true cattle healer and hero!
