WFP head Ertharin Cousin visits India

    Ertharin Cousin, the Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), has arrived in Chennai for a one-day visit.

    Ertharin Cousin, the Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), has arrived in Chennai for a one-day visit. 

    Cousin will speak at the ministerial session of the Asia Pacific Regional Consultation,co-hosted by the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation ,on the role of family farming in achieving food and nutrition security. 

    WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, delivering food in emergencies and working with communities to build resilience. 

    WFP supports the Government of India in its fight against hunger and malnutrition, especially within the framework of the National Food Security Act that makes the right to food legally enforceable for more than 800 million people across the country.

    WFP has partnered with the Ministry for Agriculture and Cooperation and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in India, and is working with the Government to reform India's public distribution system for subsidised food for the country's poorest citizens.
